Applications Architect (Canada)
Job Summary


Lead technical design and development as our IT systems evolve to meet tactical and strategic business needs, and work with support partners to ensure system stability and support.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
 

  • Understand and own CNA Canada's IT environments. Work with Business and IT teams to continually improve IT systems. Conceptualize and communicate complex system solutions to Business and IT teams before full details are known. Collaborate with Business and IT teams to plan, design, develop, implement and enhance systems and procedures.
     
  • Work with IT Business Analysts to identify technology solutions based on business requirements that will involve enhancements to existing systems and/or introduction of new technology. Understand implications and financial impacts of proposed solutions on infrastructure and operational support.
     
  • Work with IT Development and vendor teams to determine technical requirements. Create technical specification documents including interface, database, integration and architecture. Work with Enterprise architects to ensure solutions follow global IT guidelines.
     
  • Oversee internal system development to ensure technology and business requirements are being met. Provide guidance, mentorship and leadership to developers to resolve development and integration issues.
     
  • Manage the deployment of solutions to pre-prod and production.
     
  • Work with Managed Service Provider (MSP) Support Teams to ensure superior system stability and support to internal clients. Setup or revise operational IT procedures, provide CNA domain expertise, and enable MSP to offer superior service to internal clients. Serve as a point of escalation for application maintenance and support activities including resolution of incidents and defects, batch job processing, application checkouts, etc.
     
  • Coordinate support and maintenance activities with MSP to ensure critical and high priority issues are resolved in a timely manner. Work with the necessary teams to identify workable solutions to eliminate recurring issues. Work with Project Managers to ensure resources are effectively aligned between Projects and Support Activities. This includes developing and tracking key support metrics.
     

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
 

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
     
  • Minimum of 8-10 years related work experience, with at 5+ years' experience as a Solutions Architect, Application Architect or Enterprise Architect.
     
  • 5+ years' experience with application development environments, primarily Microsoft: .NET, .NET 2.0, ASP.NET, Classic ASP, VB6, VB.NET, SharePoint, C#.NET.
     
  • 5+ years' experience with database technologies, primarily Microsoft: SQL Server 2000/2005, SSIS, SSRS, DTS, Crystal Reports, CDC.
     
  • Senior level knowledge of server technologies and operating systems, primarily Microsoft: Windows 2003 Server, Windows 2008 Server, SharePoint Server, Physical vs. Virtual Machines.
     
  • Experience managing and leading Development and/or DBA teams.
     
  • Experience leading and coordinating system support activities.
     
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
     
  • Strong organizational and project management skills required.
     

Ability to develop, lead and work within a team environment.
 


Business Systems Analyst (Canada) 
Job Summary

The Business Analyst will analyze business system and user requirements to identify technology and process solutions. The Business Analyst must possess strong analytical skills and work well with Business users, IT and Vendor teams. This position will support the Finance function and must possess in-depth understanding of the P&C insurance business, especially concepts specific to Insurance Accounting and Financial Reporting. The successful candidate will be a disciplined self-starter and will collaborate with Business users and IT teams to enhance/support existing systems and implement new technologies.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
 

  • Develop strong relationships with business teams. Understand how the business unit operates, learn business unit procedures and how they utilize systems and technology. Understand business unit objectives and issues. 
     
  • Become a subject matter expert on assigned business systems and data flows. Perform system configuration and user maintenance activities as required. Provide Level 2 support to Application Support teams.
     
  • Collaborate with business teams to analyze business needs. Identify workable technology and process solutions to resolve business issues. Document business requirements including functional specifications, data mapping, data migration, user interface design, use cases and process flows. Review requirements with business stakeholders and obtain signoff.
     
  • Work with internal IT, Enterprise IT and vendor teams through the System Development Life Cycle (Analysis, Development, Testing, Deployment). Provide input and support as needed, to ensure project success.
     
  • Work with Project Manager to coordinate and communicate with business teams. Keep business teams updated on status of projects. Plan and coordinate business impacting activities including training, user testing and deployment.
     
  • Understand implications of proposed solutions on infrastructure and operational support. Exercise sound judgment and involve stakeholders (business and IT) in decision making.
     
  • Work with partners including CNA Enterprise teams, vendor and offshore organizations.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
 

  • Bachelor's degree in a related discipline.
     
  • 5+ years' related work experience including documenting processes, definition of functional requirements, data analysis, identifying and recommending process improvements, conducting gap analysis, system configuration, writing test cases, user testing, executing projects and system support.
     
  • 5+ years' experience improving business process to achieve greater business efficiency and effectiveness.
     
  • 3+ years of P&C Insurance experience
     
  • 3+ years' experience using SQL to write basic queries, join tables, gather data and perform data analysis.
     
  • 2+ years of IT experience supporting the finance function and using Generally Accepted Accounting Principle and practices (GAAP/IFRS) in an Insurance setting.
     
  • 2+ years' experience with Senator Financial Accounting System.
     
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
     
  • Ability to develop, lead and work within a team environment.
     

Data Architect (Canada)

Job Summary

The Data Architect is responsible for CNA Canada's data and reporting environments. The role will improve existing data infrastructure and procedures to support enterprise reporting and analytics objectives, and works closely with Business and IT teams to identify and implement solutions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
 

  • Understand and own CNA Canada's data analytics and reporting environments. Work with Business and IT teams to continually improve data and reporting environments. Able to conceptualize and communicate complex system solutions to Business and IT teams before full details are known. Collaborate with Business and IT teams to plan, design, develop, implement and enhance systems and procedures.
     
  • Create and maintain Data Dictionary including core business reporting definitions for CNA Canada. Ensure alignment across CNA Canada (i.e. Reporting, Finance, Actuary, IT, etc.). Ensure alignment with CNA Enterprise data and reporting teams.
     
  • Define and implement Data Governance structure and procedures for CNA Canada. Lead Data Governance meetings with Business and IT partners.
     
  • Assist in developing and executing roadmaps specific to Datawarehousing and Reporting. Work with IT teams for long term application and data planning to achieve business and reporting objectives.
     
  • Define reporting and data development standards and best practices to be followed by Reporting Team. Ensure standards and guidelines are being followed.
     
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance to the Reporting Team. This includes resolving technical issues and providing solutions.

  • 3+ years' experience with Tableau nice to have.
     
  • 3+ year's Insurance experience, preferably P&C.

Report Developer
Job Summary

The Report Developer is part of the Canada Reporting Team. This position will be responsible for generating ad hoc and standard reports through Business Objects, Crystal Reports and Excel in support of Canadian business units. The Reporting infrastructure will eventually move to Tableau as our standard reporting platform, so any Tableau knowledge for the future is a nice to have. The candidate will be experienced at writing complex but efficient queries and stored procedures to build reports.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
 

  • Meet with Business Users to identify reporting requirements. Document reporting requirements and obtain signoff from Business Users.
     
  • Translate business requirements into technical designs. Work with Reporting Architect and IT teams to validate technical designs.
     
  • Develop complex reports using various reporting tools (Business Objects, Crystal Reports, SQL, Excel, etc.) Reports will require ability to navigate and join complex data across multiple data sources.
     
  • Perform extensive testing to ensure reports are error-free before providing to Business Users.
     
  • Run and monitor batch reporting processes to ensure timely delivery of management reports.
     
  • Provide feedback to IT and Datawarehouse teams to identify opportunities to expand the datawarehouse to support business customers.
     
  • Work with Business and IT to identify, improve and/or resolve existing report/data issues.
     
  • Able to manage their own individual projects efficiently and to schedule with minimal oversight.
     
  • Other duties as assigned.
     

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
 

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
     
  • Minimum 3 years related experience; insurance industry experience is preferred.
     
  • SQL Programming: 3-5 years' experience (MSSQL).
     
  • Business Objects: 1-2 years' experience (Crystal Reports XI R2/2008 +, Webi, Universe, QAAWS and Live Office).
     
  • Excel (spreadsheets, pivot tables, macros): 3-5 years' experience.
     
  • VB.NET & JAVA: 1-2 years' experience preferred.
     
  • Tableau experience (nice to have).
     
  • Insurance background (preferably Finance and/or Actuarial): 1-2 years' experience.
     
  • Experience with report subscriptions.
     
  • Able to performance tune queries.
     
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
