Once local authorities confirm it’s safe to return to your business after a hurricane or tropical storm, we recommend taking the following steps:

Ensure safety first

  • Wait for official clearance before returning to regular business operations. Do not drink tap water until authorities confirm it's safe.

Document the damage

  • Report any downed power lines, flooded roads, damaged water mains and/or electrical equipment.

File insurance claims

  • Contact your insurance provider as soon as possible to file a claim and communicate the extent of damage.

Communicate with your network

  • Reach out to employees, customers and business partners to provide reassurance and a plan to resume business activities. Understand that they may also be dealing with their own losses.

As you return to normal business operations:

Conduct an on-site inspection for safety

  • Protect your employees and prevent future losses with a thorough inspection before employees return to work.

Take additional precautions

  • Ensure a qualified professional inspects electrical, water and HVAC systems. Be mindful where pipes may have leaked and replace all filters.

Inspect safety systems

  • Schedule an inspection of elevators and life safety systems to ensure functionality.
