CNA Releases Hospital Claim Report on Professional Liability

Hospital Professional Liability Claim Report 2015: Stepping Up to Greater Quality and Patient Safety uses CNA claim data to provide recommendations that hospitals can use to help enhance patient safety and minimize liability.

CHICAGO, October 19, 2015 — CNA today released its first hospital claim report, expanding its acclaimed series of claim reports for the healthcare market. Hospital Professional Liability Claim Report 2015: Stepping Up to Greater Quality and Patient Safety uses CNA claim data to provide recommendations that hospitals can use to help enhance patient safety and minimize liability. The claim report examines professional liability claims that closed over the 10-year period from January 1, 2005, through December 31, 2014.  

“While other hospital claim studies exist, CNA’s is different as it offers actionable recommendations, which can help a hospital become a high-reliability organization, rather than just trend analysis,” said Joyce Benton, assistant vice president, Risk Control, CNA. “By understanding and recognizing the events most commonly associated with professional liability claims, providers and hospital leadership teams will be able to implement more effective preventative measures.”  

According to the report, a consistent focus on good patient care fundamentals, such as staff training, is key to patient safety and the delivery of high-quality care. These recommendations relate to challenges found in a wide range of clinical areas and services. 

In addition to recommendations, the report offers claim scenarios to illustrate several allegations associated with significant indemnity payments, as well as a self-assessment tool to help hospitals evaluate liability exposures.
