Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
 

Tom is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CNA Financial. CNA is the 7th largest U.S. commercial lines insurer and the 13th largest U.S. property and casualty insurer.  He also chairs an Executive Committee which is responsible for strategy, results and oversight of all business units of CNA Financial Corporation, including direction of an Operating Committee.
Tom is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CNA Financial. CNA is the 7th largest U.S. commercial lines insurer and the 13th largest U.S. property and casualty insurer.  He also chairs an Executive Committee which is responsible for strategy, results and oversight of all business units of CNA Financial Corporation, including direction of an Operating Committee.

Tom retired from The Chubb Corporation on June 6, 2008, where he had served as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer.

His 31-year career at Chubb began in 1977 when he joined the company as a claims trainee. For ten years, he held various claims management positions, including managing attorney in-house counsel, litigation manager and national claim audit manager. Subsequently, he served in the company's field organization, including marketing manager, branch manager and Western Zone officer. Tom assumed the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer in December 1997. He was elected to the position of Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer in December 2002.

Tom graduated from The Delaware Law School of Widener University in 1975 with a Juris Doctor degree.
He received a bachelor's degree in biology from Adelphi University in 1971, where he serves as a Chairman of the Board of Trustees.  Tom is also on the board of directors of After School Matters, World Business Chicago, Insurance Information Institute, and Verisk Analytics.
