The Law Department provides counsel on all legal matters that address general business operations in addition to those arising from claims and product development. Our goal is to coordinate, monitor and orchestrate the actions of the entire enterprise in the highly regulated environment in which CNA does business. The department comprises the following areas:
This division is divided into five key operating segments:
Staff Counsel & Legal Services is staffed with over 200 attorneys in 34 CNA offices that primarily defend our insureds in litigation pursued against them.
Coverage Counsel acts as an in-house firm that primarily provides coverage advice to CNA claim handlers.
Corporate Litigation handles litigation against CNA directly, including all extra-contractual claims against CNA.
Claim Legal Exposure Management is divided into groups that primarily provide legal oversight and guidance on claims that exceed certain severity thresholds in our
Commercial and Specialty segments.
APMT Strategic Claims handles all strategic claims and/or coverage litigation arising out of our Environmental and Mass Tort Claims group.
Environmental and Mass Tort Claims and Construction Defect*
This division is responsible for claim resolution, as well as ceded and assumed reinsurance functions related to CNA's asbestos, pollution, mass tort and construction defect claims.
This division manages public policy issues important to CNA's business operations. It monitors and addresses legislation in 50 states, as well as the U.S. Congress. The group works closely with CNA's business units to define public policy goals and priorities, and then plans strategies to execute them. The organization strives to place CNA as the industry issue leader in our key states and on key issues federally.
Financial Support and Transactions
This division provides legal support for a variety of corporate, transactional and regulatory matters, including corporate entity and board-related matters, real estate and facility matters, reinsurance, state corporate regulatory matters, tax and securities-related matters, intellectual property, executive employment matters, employee health and welfare benefits matters and procurement.
Property & Casualty (P&C) Legal
This division provides counsel in business and regulatory law for various business units and segments within CNA. In addition to participating with CNA's business units and segments in strategic planning, our lawyers provide day-to-day legal support to these business areas.
